Guide
What is Cursor for beginners?
Cursor is a coding agent in a desktop app. Free is $0 with limited requests. Plus is $8 and Grok-only. A browser builder is easier if you have no repo yet.
Answer
Cursor is a coding agent for building software, with a desktop app and a terminal. The pricing page lists Free at $0 with limited agent and chat requests, Plus at $8 a month for Grok models only, and Premium at $30 a month before third-party models, which are billed separately. It is a reasonable second step. It is a steep first step if you do not already have a project folder. Checked on 3 November 2026.
What Cursor is
Cursor's homepage describes it as your coding agent for building ambitious software. The page shows a desktop interface and a CLI, and it says Cursor runs in the terminal, collaborates in Slack, and reviews pull requests in GitHub. The pricing page sells that agent as part of a subscription that also includes Grok and X features, such as a checkmark, fewer ads, and creator tools. You are not buying a coding-only product. Checked on 3 November 2026.
The Cursor tool page is the longer research note. Beginner fit there is 2 out of 5. That number is an editorial reading of the product shape: it is an editor, and someone who has never opened a repo will move faster in a browser app builder. It is not a score from a test. vibestacklab has not run a beginner task in Cursor.
The homepage also says you can choose models from several companies. Read that next to the pricing FAQ, not instead of it. Plus includes Grok models only. Premium and above can call third-party models, and those calls are not inside the monthly price.
The plans, in plain numbers
All of these are from the pricing page checked on 3 November 2026. Prices exclude tax. The page says you can cancel anytime, at least 24 hours before renewal.
Free is $0 a month. It includes limited AI usage, limited agent requests, and limited chat requests. The agent row in the comparison table is checked for Free, so the agent is listed, with those limits. The page does not say how many requests limited means.
Plus is $8 a month. It is described as the introductory plan, with a shared AI usage pool, Cursor, Grok chat, voice, imagine, and build, and Grok API access. A note on the card says only Grok models are available on this plan. The X features on the card, such as a premium checkmark and fewer timeline ads, are part of the same subscription.
Premium is $30 a month, marked most popular. It includes everything in Plus and 4 times more usage than Plus. The card lists the latest Grok models, cloud agents and automations, code hosting and AI code reviews, third-party models at API list price, and Grok Bot. A note says third-party models in Cursor are billed separately by usage.
Super is $100 a month, with 15 times the usage of Plus and priority model access at peak times. Ultra is $200 a month, with 50 times the usage of Plus and earliest access to products and models. Teams starts at $30 per user a month. Enterprise is custom.
The FAQ says every tier includes a pool of AI usage shared across Cursor and Grok. Inside Grok, the pool covers chat, imagine, voice, and bot. The allowance refreshes weekly, so one heavy day does not wipe out the month. If you hit the included usage, you can buy a top-off or wait. Grok API access on paid plans is billed separately at model rates and does not draw from the plan pool.
Is it a good beginner tool?
It depends what beginner means.
If beginner means you have a folder of code, you can open a terminal, and you want an agent in the editor, Cursor is built for that job. Download it from cursor.com after you have read the plan. Start on Free if you only want to look at the interface. Expect the limits. Move to Plus only if Grok models are enough. Move to Premium if you need other models, and treat the API line as a second budget. The FAQ's own advice for new AI users is Premium, not Plus. Plus is the plan they point at social creators with limited AI usage. That is their wording, not a test result from this site.
If beginner means you want a web page this afternoon and you do not have a repository, Cursor is the long way around. You would be learning the editor and the agent at the same time. Bolt and Lovable start in the browser from a sentence. Their free limits are in Bolt's free tier guide and Is Lovable free?. Come back to Cursor when you have files you want to keep editing.
Cursor vs Claude Code is the page if you are choosing between this editor and a terminal agent. Copilot vs Cursor is the page if you already live in another editor. The coding agents category lists the whole set. None of those pages declares a tested winner.
What to ignore on the first day
On Plus, third-party models are not included. The pricing FAQ says they are available at API list price and that you can set a spending cap. Set the cap before you turn them on. Cloud agents are listed on Premium, not on Free or Plus.
Privacy mode can be turned on in settings. The FAQ says that when it is on, code data is not used for training by Cursor or its model providers. This guide is not a legal reading of that promise. The homepage's customer quotes are not repeated here.
A first session that stays cheap
- Create an empty folder and one file, or open a toy repository you can delete.
- Sign up for Free. Click around. Do not paste a private codebase in on day one.
- Ask for one small change. Read the diff before you accept it.
- If Free stops you, decide between waiting and paying. Plus is $8 and Grok-only. Premium is $30 plus any third-party model usage.
- If the diff does not make sense, you are not behind. The editor is showing you the work the agent did. That reading is the job you still have.
How much vibe coding costs puts this $8 and $30 next to the browser plans so you can see they are different doors, not three items on one receipt.
