MCP servers worth installing

Updated 2026-10-15. Sourced from vendor docs · verified 15 Oct 2026 · hands-on test pending wherever a sentence depends on a vendor page.

MCP connects an agent to a tool outside the chat. Install one server when you have a job for it, from the official project, and read what it can touch.

Answer

MCP is an open standard for connecting an AI app to external tools and data. The servers worth installing first are none, then one official server that matches a job you already do. A random server from a chat paste can read files or secrets.

Beginner path

Skip this until you need it

An MCP server lets the agent call something outside the chat, such as your issues or your files. Your first app does not need that. A prompt and a folder are enough.

If a tutorial says "paste this MCP config" and you do not know the server, do not paste it.

What to install

The protocol introduction says MCP connects an assistant to data sources, tools, and workflows, and it names clients including Claude, ChatGPT, VS Code, and Cursor. Reference servers live in the modelcontextprotocol/servers repository. Start there, not in a gist.

Worth installing, in order:

  1. Nothing, until a task is blocked because the agent cannot see a system you use every day.
  2. One official server whose README you read. A GitHub issues server is a reasonable first if your work is issues. A filesystem server is reasonable only on a folder you would let a coworker open.
  3. A second server only after the first one has been boring for a week.

Devin's self-serve doc says Pro includes Slack, Linear, and MCP integrations. That is a plan feature, not a list of servers this site has audited. GitHub's Copilot plans page includes Model Context Protocol in the feature comparison. Use the live table for which plan has it.

  • The server is from the protocol org or the vendor, and I opened its README.
  • I can say which folder or account it can see.
  • Its credential is not in the repo.
  • I can remove it without breaking the app I ship.

Questions

What does MCP stand for?

Model Context Protocol. The spec describes it as an open-source standard for connecting AI applications to external systems.

Does every coding tool on this site support it?

No. This page only names products whose own docs mention MCP: the protocol site lists Cursor among clients, GitHub's Copilot plans page has an MCP row, and Devin's self-serve doc lists MCP integrations on Pro. Blank cells in a copied table are not treated as a yes.
